The housing characteristics in Ajah Lagos State peri-urban settlements is characterised by high level of informal development, poor quality and confronted with multi-dimensional challenges. Policy response to the pattern of growth does not match the pace of rapid housing development in Lagos peri-urban settlements. This research examined the characteristics of housing in the peri-urban settlements of Lagos State, Nigeria and specifically investigated the drivers of housing characteristics, socio-economic attributes of the residents, the quality of housing and the challenges of the management of the emerging peri-urban housing developments. Using a case study approach, housing characteristics in peri-urban settlements in Ajah Eti osa Local Government Areas were selected to represent the rapidly urbanizing metropolitan peripheral areas in Lagos State. Data were collected through primary and secondary sources. Findings revealed that major drivers of housing development in the study area are principally land affordability, low cost of living, easy linkage and proximity to urban centres, and provision of better quality housing through exclusive gated housing development. The findings also demonstrate that different housing initiatives in the peri-urban settlements performed differently in typology and resident’s perception. Socio-economic attributes revealed a multi-cultural households composition, reasonable literacy level and mostly male headed households. Findings also showed factors that influence dwelling quality in the study area are choice of building materials, neighbourhood and locational quality. Challenges to governance are location-specific and mostly poor infrastructural development. It is recommended that improved quality and user performance peri-urban housing development can be achieved through residents’ participation in housing policy design and also by timely regional policy response to the pace of housing characteristics in Lagos peri-urban settlements. Population sprawl

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/1640

Biodiesel made from the transesterification of plant-derived oils is an important alternative fuel source for diesel engines. Several disparate studies have emphasized the significance of biodiesels in emission reduction and engine efficiency. The present study examined the effect of using palm kernel oil (PKO), pure petroleum diesel, and its blends on the fuel consumption rates, energy expended, brake-specific fuel consumption, and brake thermal efficiency of a four-cylinder tractor under varying operating speeds (700 – 1900rpm) at constant torque. The study was conducted at a large farming site in Anambra State, Nigeria. The findings indicated that PKO biodiesel blends had the overall optimum energy output, fuel consumption rates, and brake-specific fuel consumption, respectively, at the highest engine speed of 1900. Although B10's rating of 60.6% for thermal brake efficiency was impressive, it was lower than B100's 66.95 %. Based on the results, B10 is the best gasoline for testing and may be used as a replacement fuel in four-cylinder farm tractor engines with no modifications. The study concludes that biodiesel blends showed potential as an alternative to fossil diesel.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/1578

Asphalt pavements constitute a high portion of Nigeria's roadways, which have high traffic volumes. The potential deterioration in the long-term performance of these pavements due to climate change has not been given much research attention. To this extent, the present study evaluated the pavement susceptibility of Federal roads in Edo state of South-South Nigeria. The study employed the Delphi technique to examine expert opinions. The standard deviation of the answers to two rounds of questionnaires was used to evaluate the consensus reached by the 10-person Delphi panel. The result showed that one of the four federal roads analyzed in the study was classified as having a high susceptibility, two were classified as having a medium susceptibility, and the remaining road was classified as having a low susceptibility. This research demonstrates that the Delphi technique, which incorporates both objective and subjective assessments, can comprehensively evaluate road pavements' vulnerability to climate change. Therefore, the government should employ adaptive maintenance plans for the roads' varying degrees of susceptibility.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/824

In this study, the effects of hydraulic systems on lift speeds and fuel consumption of diesel forklifts were investigated. Well-known forklift models produced on the subject were examined.Literature review was done on the subject. Forklifts usually with the help of a single pump, the driver steering and lift hydraulic system is working. In our project, as the original value, two separate pumps are used for steering and elevator. In this way, during the operation, the steering is not consumed power. This extra power, which is not used for steering, increases the lifting capacity of the fork in the lift during load lifting. The hydraulic working system of our model is shown in mathematics and physics. Also with solidworks, we found the capacity values for fork lifting. The load lifting capacity values of the hydraulic system of our prototype model and the other hydraulic systems of the equivalent models were explained. The performance of our model seems to be quite good in terms of its load-bearing capacity, among other models that do not apply a dual hydraulic system. The design and construction of our model was completed and performance tests were performed. It is also possible to apply the tandem hydraulic system to other forklift models.

In order to improve the characteristics of the 3000 kg capacity diesel forklifts we are working on, KFD30 Forklift was developed with the aim of increasing performance. After the design and dengeassembly stages of this prototype model, stability tests and performance tests were performed in accordance with TSE ISO Standards. In order to find the maximum performance outputs of the diesel forklift we developed, the test results were taken into consideration and adaptations were made on our prototype model. Surface slopes and velocities that our model could work with and without load were determined. The center of gravity of our model was found to ensure that the load center does not go outside the balance triangle during operation. It is very important that the test results also confirm our original values.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/373

This paper aims to improve coefficient of performance of system. To improve the coefficient of performance, it should be noted that compressor work should decrease and refrigerating effect should increase. Modifications in condenser are meant to increase degree of sub-cooling of refrigerant which increased refrigerating effect or more cooling water is required in condenser. The purpose of a compressor in vapour compression system is to elevate the pressure of the refrigerant, but refrigerant leaves the compressor with comparatively high velocity which may cause splashing of liquid refrigerant in the condenser tube, liquid hump and damage to condenser by erosion. It is needed to convert this kinetic energy to pressure energy by using diffuser. By using diffuser power consumption is less for same refrigerating effect so performance is improved.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/372

The world is developing at a very fast pace, also population in urban areas is also increasing with it due to change in demographics, and thus strong and durable buildings are the need of the hour. The design of steel framed buildings must take into consideration the lateral drift of the structure due to wind loading and any serviceability issues that may arise from this lateral movement. This paper focuses on one of these issues, damage to nonstructural components. It is an important issue which may significantly impact the buildings structural performance and economy. Furthermore, because these serviceability issues are not codified, there is a wide variation among design firms in how they are dealt with, leading to a greater economic disparity.

Economic growth world over is driven by energy, whether in the form of finite resources such as coal, oil and gas or in renewable forms such as hydroelectric, wind, solar and bio-mass or its converted form, electricity(power). Increased energy consumption (especially of electricity) is inevitable with higher GDP growth. Coal was created by the fossilised remains of plants and has high carbon content. DEA is a multi-factor productivity analysis model for measuring the relative efficiency of a homogenous set of coal mines (DMU’s). For every inefficient coal mine, DEA identifies a set of corresponding efficient coal mines that can be utilized as benchmarks for improvement of performance and productivity. Benchmarking and ranking of coal mines based on efficiency scores using advanced DEA models like, Increasing Returns to Scale (IRS), Decreasing Returns to Scale (DRS), Cross Efficiency (CE) Models.

One of the main disadvantages in constructing houses is high cost of the building. High cost is primary requirement for constructing the house in places where people are below poverty line, is becoming one of the most significant problem of peoples. On the other hand, urbanization growth will increase rubbish especially non-renewable ones. Eco friendly architectural principles are being incorporated into more buildings every day in the world but they are still out of reach of many people due to lack of knowledge and awareness. In this paper we implemented strategies and systems based on Eco-friendly environment that could still be built at very low costs, with waste materials that is plastic bottle, providing adequate thermal comfort while being sustainable. At the end, it concluded that in different factors such as time of execution, load capacity, flexibility, reducing waste, cost and energy efficiency, plastic bottles can be more effective compared to some conventional building materials such as brick, concrete and ceramic blocks.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/359

In present scenario, most of the industrial and domestic refrigerators working on vapour compression refrigeration cycle are equipped with R134a as a refrigerant. R134a is having zero ozone depletion potential, but it has high global warming potential of 1300.Hence there is need identified for alternative refrigerant to R134a. This research work is focused on performance analysis of vapour compression refrigeration system with regard to COP, refrigerating effect, compressor work for two refrigerants i.e., R134a and blend of R290 and R600a in the proportion of 60%+40% respectively as an alternative refrigerant. Performance measure like compressor discharge temperature is also considered for analysis. The results of blend of R290 and R600a are compared with halogenated hydrocarbon R134a. Trials are conducted for R134a and blend of R290 and R600a. Results showed that COP for R134a refrigerant increases with decreases in evaporator temperature and for blend of R290 and R600a it tries to remain constant. The maximum value of COP achieved for R134a and blend R290and R600a are 3.11 and 4.09 respectively.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/354

A Crane hook is a device for grabbing and lifting loads of heavy duty by mean of a device such as crane hoist. A crane hook is usually equipped with a safety latch to prevent the disengagement of the lifting rope to which the load is being attach. The CAD model of a lifting crane hook is initially prepared from the Analytical Design. In the present report crane hook of trapezoidal section is modeled using UG-NX 8.0, further, importing the CAD model into ANSYS 15.0 we estimate until 20 tones i.e. equivalent to 200000N load to be gradually applied, eventually we observed the von-misses stress developed in the model by FEM method these results von-misses stresses are being compared with Taguchi L9 orthogonal array for specific results. Thus, these results would lead us to determine various stresses and deflections in the designed CAD model. In order to reach the most optimum model from different materials of hook would be tested and the most efficient material would be selected.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/352

Paper shows the review of asynchronous Viterbi decoder using hand shake protocol as Dual – Rail protocol. Viterbi decoders are used for decoding convolution forward error correction codes in a large proportion of digital transmission systems including mobile phones and digital television. For portable applications, the battery size and lifetime is of commercial importance as is the size of the electronics. The approach adopted in the Viterbi design is to use a self-timed (or asynchronous) timing strategy. This saves power through not having to generate or distribute a global clock. Instead, timing between blocks is performed by local handshake signals. This enables an asynchronous system to only consume power when doing useful work and to have an idle power of near zero. Furthermore, there is an inherent advantage to asynchronous systems in that a system can switch almost instantaneously between the idle state and maximum activity; this is much more difficult to organize in a clocking system.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/350

With the recent government regulations, of banning the ozone depleting substances and Kyoto protocol later on curtaining to the use of substances which contribute to global warming, conventional refrigerants are to be replaced by the environment friendly refrigerants. Present day mankind depends heavily on refrigeration for his daily needs. This can be noticed by wide range of applications such as for home refrigeration, comfort cooling, preservation and transport, commercial and industrial air conditioning, hospitals, offices etc. These refrigeration system works on simple vapour compression refrigeration cycle. The water cooler system also works on simple vapour compression refrigeration cycle and uses R134a as a refrigerant. It is environment friendly. The performance of refrigerant R134a has been found and the results were used to evaluate the behavior of the system under varying load conditions and to measure the COP of the system. The water cooler system has been designed and fabricated specially for small capacity.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/345

In road-transport terminology, a lane departure warning system (LDWS) is a mechanism designed to warn a driver when the vehicle begins to move out of its lane on freeways and arterial roads. These systems are designed to minimize accidents by addressing the main causes of collisions: driving error, distraction and drowsiness. In this work the authors present a system which has the potential to reduce fatalities which are caused by the common type of crashes called the Run –Off-Road (ROR) crash. The work is to build a lane Departure Warning System for use on roads and highways. The functioning of the system will be to constantly monitor the car placement in relation to the road marks (with the aid of infrared proximity sensor), detect when the driver drifts away from the current lane without an appropriate warn signal, and provide a quick and effective alert to the driver to take a corrective action. To provide an alert system to trigger the quickest response possible. So the aim of this work is to make an intelligent system in hope to design a safer mean of transportation to save lives wasted on roads yearly, especially with the increase in the number of cars introduced to the roads each year. So the need of such security systems in today’s intelligent cars is essential.

Quadcopter also known as quadrotor is the next form of helicopters having more dynamic stability than helicopters. They play a predominant role in different areas like surveillance, military operations, fire sensing and some important areas having many complexities. This paper focuses on the aerodynamic effects of quadcopter. It addresses all the aspects of quadcopter ranging from mechanical design to electronics used. It provides backup to the selection of different components with the help of various formulas from research papers. It also gives clear results with respect to weight of components and their corresponding costs. Along with this, finite element analysis is done on the frame so as to sustain the loads generated in the vehicle and concluded that small deformation occurred on the center plates are safe and within the limit.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/341

Real estate industry is fragmented, very sensitive to the economic cycles & political environment, and has a significantly high rate of business failure. More than 50% of all the real estate businesses have failed within the first five years as risks associated with their startup are not being considered. Business failure is an extremely disruptive force especially in case of construction industry. Previous studies on construction project risk management (PRM) have focused on the project level rather than the enterprise level. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a process affected by an entity’s board of directors, management and other personnel applied in a creating strategies across the enterprise. The objective of this study was to identify and assess the risk associated with the residential real estate business and also to formulate an enterprise risk management model.

https://nnpub.org/index.php/MCE/article/view/340

Aluminium and its alloys are used in fabrication because of their low weight, good corrosion resistance and weldability. Pure aluminium is soft and therefore not suitable for structures, which require strength. The Present investigation aims to compare the mechanical properties of non-heat treatable Aluminium alloy AA5083 and heat treatable. Aluminium alloy AA7020 using Tungsten Inert Gas welding. 5556A filler were used to weld AA7020 alloy and 5183A filler for AA5083 alloy. Effect of pulsing mode over conventional mode of GTA process were also investigated for AA5083 alloy. In this work, gas tungsten arc welding process has been selected because it is low heat input process. Low heat input process has selected because AA7020 and AA5083 were low melting point material. The alternating current (AC) power source has been selected because of better cleaning action and high heat concentration on the materials can be avoided. Mechanical testing like tensile test, impact test, bend and hardness test have been critically analysed and the properties were summarized and correlating with microstructure and SEM fractographs.
